National Blue Trail route / part XXI

distance 62.5 km; journey time 19 hours 20 minutes

The Bükk section of the Blue Trail visits the country's highest landscape and the mountain with the tallest average height. Particularly undisturbed forests and sunny meadows create the wild and romantic region of the Bükk. If you look at the Bükk from a distance, you can see a long mountain range with an almost flat peak that stands out from its surroundings.

The most special part of the mountain range is the Bükk Plateau, also known as the "Giants' Table". The plateau cut in half by the Garadna stream has more than 50 peaks higher than 900 meters. The 700-800 meter high "Giants' Table" and the surrounding mountain range forms Hungary's perhaps most varied mountain region. Moreover, in addition to some classic tourist houses, we can use many chalets and even cave hotels.

TIPS

• Be prepared that this section will probably take us 2 days, so we have to rely on the limited accommodation on the plateau.

• In Bélapátfalva, make time to visit the Cistercian Abbey.

• At the cave accommodation at Cserepes-kő, you can spend the night for free if you can put up with the truly nomadic conditions.

• In Bánkút, you can spend the night in the tourist house or the guesthouse, but there are also several chalets available nearby (e.g. Hármaskút, Csurgó).

• The highest viewpoint of the Bükk is the Petőfi lookout tower, which is a 15-minute walk from Bánkút.
